Spring Break 2009

The First Activity we did was to climb the "Y". It was a good thing we did it on Monday because the weather got increasingly cold and ultimately snowed the end of the week. It was a fun family hike none the less and it accommodated our budget :) The "Y" on the mountain measures 322 feet in height and 120 feet in width. The school purchased 380 acres on the face of the big mountain east of of the Upper Campus, extending clear to the top of the mountain, for the project. In these two pictures you can see the same view of the Provo Valley when the "Y" was created vs the view of the Provo Valley today. A great article to read about the "Y" and how it came to be can be found by clicking on the following link. www.byhigh.org/History/ Ymountain/Yletter.html An excerpt from the story reads as follows: The students stood in a zig zag line about 8 feet apart stretching from the bottom of the hill to the site of the Y. The first man took the bag of lime, sand or rocks and carried it 8 feet and handed it to the next man. The second carried it another 8 feet and handed it to the third man and thus the bag went up the hill, each man shuttling back and forth along his 8-foot portion of the trail. All the students started with enthusiasm as they expected to be through by 10 o'clock a.m. But it was a much bigger job than anyone expected. It was 4 p.m. before the Y was covered, and then only by a thin layer. So no attempt was made to cover the other two letters. It was very hard work and most of the boys had had no breakfast and no dinner. No one dared to quit as it would break up the line. In the afternoon it was more than some of them could take and they fainted and had to be helped down the hill. I am sure those who worked in that line that day will never forget it. They were somewhat rewarded when they got back to campus and looked at the beautiful white Y on the mountainside in just the right proportions. It looked like it was standing in the air just above the ground. Day 2 We did some house work, laundry and what ever else we needed to do, or not :) Day 3 "Maggie Moo's" I remember when my husband & I moved to South Carolina and we met with the Bishop in our new ward. It was shortly after my husband had joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Our visit covered one point, that was, to prepare us, there would be A LOT of Ice Cream in the future because "Mormons" love ice-cream and it was something we typically eat on some occasions, rather all occasions, Birthdays, Holidays, Family get togethers, after recitals, concerts and you name it, you love it and live it, ICE CREAM! Doug and I were down with that. I am happy to report, the Utah Valley has no shortage of Ice Cream Vendors, and who would've known that "Maggie Moo's" would be one of them. I had no idea myself until I asked my friend Ashley what it was and she said, "It's ice cream and it's so yummy". So during our break, I took the family on a field-trip to see "Maggie Moo's" and it did not disappoint. We got to see how the ice cream was made and even help a little, the best part I think was making sure it tasted good. So here is an extra THANK YOU to you Ashley :) Day 4 The kids and I went to Draper to roller skate and spend the day at the Family Fun Center where we met up with our dear friend Christine Taylor, her daughter Emmie (sp)? -and a few neighborhood friends from her area. This was only possible thanks to the generous donation of my dear friend Carla. Here is my THANKS to you too Carlita! This was a crazy fun place with lots to do for the whole family. We really did spend the whole day there. These are some highlights: Harrison used his 10 tokens on one game "The Wheel" and won the "JACKPOT" which was a 1,ooo tickets. He was so excited as was his siblings. Harrison didn't even flinch once in his willingness to split these tickets evenly amongst his brothers and sister. How proud can a mother be? I was that proud. Later that night we picked-up our friend Will who was visiting from Glens Falls, New York. He stayed the night with us and most of the next day. As much as we love Will, he is known for dragging the NY cold with him when he travels. It did in fact start snowing just after we picked him up, here are some pictures of what went from green grass and signs of spring to WINTER SNOW FALL? The next day: Day 4 Jonathan tests out the snow, in shorts? Day 5 We went to SLC to see the Temple It is so beautiful. The most expensive part of that was I guess the Meter. We left because we were out of change and we got hungry. After we were done we stopped and ate PBJ's at Pioneer Park and then drove home. The greatest of all my possessions is without question, my Eternal Family! One day we'll all be inside these doors together :) That about sums up our SPRING BREAK 2009
